PARENTS/GUARDIANS.....
ALL car riders must pass through the SOUTH exit of the building. BUS kids will still exit out the WEST side and WALKERS/BIKE RIDERS can exit out the EAST side. Students will be available for pick up in the south parking lot only, where a crossing guard is available. The parking lot is a very busy place after school and avoiding accidents is of the utmost importance! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Also - SKATEBOARDS are NOT allowed to be on the school grounds. If you student brings his/her skateboard to school... once they are on the school grounds they must walk it in to school and keep it in the office until the end of the day. Once school is dismissed - they may ride it once they are off school property. THANK YOU

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be scheduled online. You may sign up for conferences from now until Sept. 24th. Go to www.usd416.org and select the Parent Teacher Conference Tab. Proceed to Sign Up NOW on the right hand side. Because this is the first Parent/Teacher Conference available online, everyone is new and will be required to Sign Up Now! A parent will only need to log on once to see conferences available for Rockville and Broadmoor schools and sign up for the preferred day and times for multiple children. After School Safety

As you may have heard, there was a tragic accident last week in Gardner involving a 7 year-old boy. As at any school, the safety of our students is the number one priority. This morning we met as a school and talked about how important it is to follow directions when entering and exiting the school grounds. For safety, we have a staff member located at crossings in the south parking lot and at the exit of the building. We ask that students are dropped off at the front door in the morning and picked up in the south lot and ONLY cross the street where a crossing guard is stationed. All students being picked up will now be exited through the south doors.

Please carefully monitor your speed and be observant as you pull though the BES parking lot as we have a large number of students that walk or ride their bikes to and from school. We know traffic gets congested in the morning and afternoon, but we all can agree that preventing accidents is the priority.

BES Gives Back!

Thinking of others, practicing generosity and showing compassion are all important pieces to practicing kindness. Our students and community have proven their willingness to give back over and over again! This year, students will have several opportunities to give back and we encourage families to help!

Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home-away-from-home” for families so that they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. The pop tabs collection drive provides funding that goes directly to the RMH by generating funds from the recycled pop tabs. Last year, our schools astounded the RMH by being among the top pop tab collectors in the area despite it being only our first year of collecting for them! Our goal this year is simply to top last year and knock their socks off yet again! This is an easy way for students to give back. Simply collect pop tabs and bring them to school and turn them into our collection boxes in the office!

Harvesters Food Drive

Harvesters is a food bank that serves the greater Kansas City area. Harvesters distributes food and household items to a number of agencies that serve those in need in Miami County. Louisburg is served by their monthly food distribution at the Senior Center and also through the back snack program which serves 30 elementary school students. Broadmoor Elementary School will be a collection site for Harvesters from now until Christmas break. Students, families and the community are encouraged to participate and bring food to fill the barrel. Non-perishable food items only.

We encourage students, staff and families to join BES in giving back to the community and practicing compassion and generosity for those in need.

The Kindness Challenge

Kindness: The ability of kindness: The practice of being compassionate.

Kindness is the thread that ties us all together, makes our days worthwhile. Think for a second about some act of kindness that you encountered today. Kindness can transform you- your attitude, your day, your outlook, your next move and your expectations. And the most fascinating thing is that kindness is so simple that it can be found in the smallest of words or gestures. Opening a door, sharing your pencils, telling the cook how good lunch was, doing something before you are asked to do it, saying something kind, writing a thank you note or simply smiling at a stranger. It is about paying attention to others and striving to make their day!

In the spirit of promoting positive character traits in our students, I will be kicking off The Kindness Challenge this Friday morning at a school wide assembly. The idea is simple: “No act of kindness, no matter how small is wasted!” I will be challenging students and staff to make an effort to be kind in big ways and small ways. I will also be challenging them to “catch” others being kind and nominate them for the Kindness Challenge. Once a month, Mr. McLean and I will be reading through all the nominations and selecting several to be honored at an assembly. Prizes will be given, games will be played and fun will be had as we celebrate the ways that kindness transforms our school!

First week of school is in the books!

What an exciting week this has been @ BES! From the moment our students walked in the doors Monday, I could tell this school year was going to be a great one. I think I can speak for all the staff at BES in saying how wonderful it is to get the opportunity to work with the awesome children of Louisburg. They bring an energy to the building and a never ending thirst for knowledge. BES is truly a wonderful place to come to work and school everyday!

USD 416 has several resources in place to keep the communication lines open between home and school. In addition to this blog, parents have the opportunity to sign up for the Parent Portal. There you can check your child's grades, attendance, and lunch balance. For information how to sign up, please contact the BES office. Thanks to the support of First National Bank in Louisburg, text alert sign up is also available. There you can have emergency school info sent directly to your phone. The USD 416 website also provides a great deal of important school information as well as the opportunity to sign up for email alerts when content has been added.

Please take the time to look over these wonderful communication tools to you to see what fits your needs best. As always, the office is open from 7:30 - 4 PM Monday-Friday to provide any assistance needed. I look forward to getting to know all of our new students and continue to build of the many successes of last year.

ENROLLMENT FOR 2010-11 IS HERE!

Today all students in the Louisburg School District will bring home a "Census Verification Report" and a "BUS" card. Please look over this report as this is EVERYTHING we have listed on your student. Make any necessary corrections. Then if your child rides the bus or you plan to have them ride the bus... fill out BOTH sides of the bus card. BOTH forms need to be returned NO LATER than 5/17. By returning these forms, your student will automatically be enrolled for next year. At this time, we are unable to handle TRUE on-line enrollment, but our district is working on this process in hopes that we will have it in the years to come. We appreciate your patience.

A copy of the letter coming home with your student is attached below. Remember - enrollment day is scheduled for 8/10 from 8 am - 8 pm. Additional enrollment forms may be filled out on 8/10 or you may go online at www.usd416.org as early as 7/5/10.and complete the additional forms (AUP/HEALTH, etc.. ).

* Special Olympics Track and Field event is scheduled for next Saturday - May 1st. Our kiddos have worked extremely hard to prepare for the event and they are excited for the big day! : ) If you are available, it would definitely be worth the trip to come take it all in.

* Summer Movie Series Tickets ARE BACK! Let’s face it,you can’t go to the pool everyday this summer! Tickets are available for all ages and includes admission to 8 shows FOR ONLY $13! Team Teaching @ BES

We are excited to introduce a new teaching model in the 4th grade for next year. Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Key have decided to combine their classes and team teach!. Team teaching has been around for a long time and has been successful at all levels of education. The following is some information to help parents, teachers, and students to understand the concept of a team-taught classroom and it's benefits.

First off, what is team teaching?

Team teaching is traditionally thought of as when more than one teacher is involved in instruction within a classroom. There are a few different models of team teaching, and more than one model may be carried out within one class period. In the model BES will incorporate, two classrooms will be combined to create one larger class.

What are the benefits of a team taught classroom?

When team teaching is organized and carried out effectively, positive effects are felt by students, parents and school faculty. Research shows that students taught using a team teaching approach have higher levels of achievement. There is also more contact with parents by teachers in a team teaching situation. Additionally, schools that employ team teaching have teachers who are more satisfied with their job, resulting in an improved work climate.

The collaborative teaching environment also creates a more stable learning environment for students. Each student receives more individual attention on a daily basis in a team taught classroom. Team teaching allows for smoother transitions which provide more time for students to be engaged in learning. In addition, our students will have the opportunity to be assisted and assessed by two professionals with two perspectives being provided. In our team teaching classroom, you can be assured that the educational routine will be uninterrupted and learning will take place as usual in the case that one of us would be absent.

Is a team-taught environment right for my child?

Most likely the answer is yes, but you may not feel it would be the right fit for your child. If you feel your child/student would not thrive in that environment, you have the option to opt out.

Finally, what does it look like?

It is often difficult to picture what this classroom looks like. We would welcome parents to visit and see for themselves next year. Right now, we have to settle for a YouTube clip of other teachers demonstrating the different methods that will be utilized next year.

Spring is here....sort of!

It was great to see all the smiling and happy faces this morning as students and staff returned from Spring Break. We are hitting the stretch run for the school year and are still working on state assessments. Parents, please continue to read to or with your child every night and practice those math facts frequently. Here are some tips taken from School Family.com to help with homework:

Be a stage manager. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Make sure necessary materials (paper, pencils, dictionary) are available.

Be a motivator. Homework provides a great opportunity for you to tell your child how important school is. Be positive about homework. The attitude you express will be the attitude your child acquires.

Be a role model. When your child does homework, don’t sit and watch TV. If your child is reading, you read, too. If your child is doing math, balance your checkbook. Help your child see that the skills he is practicing are related to things you do as an adult.

Be a monitor. Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration. If your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. If frustration sets in, suggest a short break.

Be a mentor. When the teacher asks that you play a role in homework, do it. If homework is meant to be done alone, stay away. Homework is a great way for kids to develop lifelong learning skills. Overinvolvement can be a bad thing.

Congratulations to our own Sarah Lohse and LMS teacher Jackie Tappen for being named Louisburg's teachers of the year! The following is a press release from USD 416:

It is with great delight that I share with you our two Kansas Teacher of the Year Winners for 2010.

Sarah Lohse, third grade teacher at Broadmoor was surprised to learn of her nomination. Her third graders were busy working on Dr. Seuss work. They were all decked out in their Cat in the Hat hats including Sarah. There may be a photo in the paper.

Jackie Tappan, seventh grade teacher at the middle school was also leading her students through some exercises with a Dr. Seuss theme. Jackie was not wearing a hat but she was surprised by the presence of her entire family presenting her with flowers and cookies.

Each of these educators is very deserving of this honor and I want to wish them all the best as they represent Louisburg USD 416 in the fall at the regional banquet.

State Assessments Scheduled to Begin Tuesday

Broadmoor Elementary will begin taking state reading and math assessments on Tuesday, February 23rd. These assessments provide valuable information on individual student progress as well as important data about our school as a whole. To find the exact dates that your child's class will be testing, click the appropriate link on the top left of this page. Here are some tips to remember to do your best on the test!

1. Have a Positive Attitude
Approach the big test as you'd approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it! A positive attitude goes a long way toward success.

2. Make a Plan
The week before the test, ask your teacher what the test is going to cover. Is it from the textbook only? Class notes? Can you use your calculator? If you've been absent, talk to friends about material you may have missed. Make a list of the most important topics to be covered and use that as a guide when you study. Circle items that you know will require extra time. Be sure to plan extra time to study the most challenging topics.

3. The Night Before
Cramming doesn't work. If you've followed a study plan, the night before the test you should do a quick review and get to bed early. Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late!

4. The Morning of the Test
Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don't skip breakfast the morning of the test. Get to school early and do a ten-minute power study right before the test, so your brain is turned on and tuned up.

5. Test Time
Before the test begins, make sure you have everything you'll need - scratch paper, extra pencils, your calculator (if you're allowed to use it). Understand how the test is scored: Do you lose points for incorrect answers? Or is it better to make guesses when you're not sure of the answer? Read the instructions! You want to make sure you are marking answers correctly.

6. Manage Your Time
Scan through the test quickly before starting. Answering the easy questions first can be a time saver and a confidence builder. Plus, it saves more time in the end for you to focus on the hard stuff.

7. I'm Stuck!
Those tricky problems can knock you off balance. Don't get worried or frustrated. Reread the question to make sure you understand it, and then try to solve it the best way you know how. If you're still stuck, circle it and move on. You can come back to it later. What if you have no idea about the answer? Review your options and make the best guess you can, but only if you don't lose points for wrong answers.

8. Multiple-Choice Questions
The process of elimination can help you choose the correct answer in a multiple-choice question. Start by crossing off the answers that couldn't be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices before selecting your answer.

9. Neatness Counts
If your 4s look like 9s, it could be a problem. Be sure that your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For machine-scored tests, fill in the spaces carefully.

10. I'm Done!
Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question). Spend the last remaining minutes going over the hardest problems before you turn in your test.

Community Budget Forum

Why: To share information about the state of the state finances and how it may impact our district.

What: There will be an audio-visual presentation created by Kansas Association of School Boards; a brief update on the district's finances with an explanation of how the budget works; a review of a list of possible suspended expenses should we see drastic cuts in our revenue; time for quesitons and discussion.

Care Kits off to Heart to Heart…..

Our care kits have started their journey! Butch Overly (Bobby Overly’s husband… many of you know Bobby who has been a para in our school for years and is now working at RES) is a volunteer for Heart to Heart International and he kindly volunteered to pick up our care kits and deliver them to the Heart to Heart Warehouse. They were picked up this morning and sent to the front of the line at their distribution center. After passing inspection they were added to a palate of other care kits, shrink wrapped and labeled with the Heart to Heart logo before being sent to the holding area to be sent to Haiti! Butch assured me that they would likely begin the journey to Haiti within a week! They are currently working to get priority supplies such as medical supplies and water to Haiti. The care kits are sent alongside those items at this time. Heart to Heart is our connection to a world in need and I am so proud of our students for taking the time to help!

BES Students Place 2nd & 4th in County Spelling Bee!

Congratulations are in order for Jackson Hoyl and Taylor Sears! Jackson placed 2nd and Taylor 4th in the Miami County Spelling Bee Friday at Paola Middle School. In fact, Louisburg students took 4 of the top 6 places in the Bee! The competition came from 10 different schools throughout the county and ranged from grades 3-8. The event was amazing and we are very proud of Jackson and Taylor!

Care Kit Drive Final Numbers

The count is in... Louisburg Elementary Schools will send 205 care kits to Haiti! Broadmoor students brought 111 care kits and Rockville students brought 94. Thank you for encouraging our students to take action to help others.

Jump Rope For Heart Event February 9th

Broadmoor students are gearing up for our annual Jump Rope For Heart event here at BES February 9th.
Jump Rope For Heart develops rope-jumping skills that are fun for everyone while promoting the value of physical activity and teamwork. Students learn about the seriousness of heart disease and stroke, the lifelong benefits of physical activity and the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle. The program also teaches students to set and achieve goals and shows them how they can make a difference through volunteering and community service.

How To Help Your Child Participate

Sign the Permission Slip and return it to the school.
Help your child set a goal.
Select the desired gift level (see Student Thank-You Gifts).
Determine the dollar amount that's needed.
- If $75 level, ask 3 people for $25.
- If $200 level, ask 20 people for $10.
Parent/Guardian makes a contribution.
Ask family, friends and businesses. Ask them in person, by phone or e-mail.
- Remind your child not to ask strangers for money.
- Remind your child not to collect door-to-door.
Please collect all contributions in advance and convert all cash to check(s) payable to the American Heart Association.
Find out if sponsors’ employers have a matching gifts program and indicate matched amounts on the sponsor form.
Turn in contributions by the due date.

Care Kit Drive for Haiti

In the month of January, our character education theme has been ‘alertness & action’. Being alert to the world around you gives you the opportunity to gain knowledge that can help you to grow, learn, help others and stay safe. Being willing to take action, or get up and do something can turn great dreams, ideas and intentions into reality.

Broadmoor Elementary is having a Care kit drive for the earthquake victims in Haiti! This is an easy opportunity for our students to pay attention to the needs of those in crisis and take action to help.

The care kits will be collected and delivered to Heart to Heart International, a local organization focused on promoting global health. The care kits will be distributed to victims of the disaster, providing them with the opportunity to fight germs and illness in the wake of the devastation. Participation by our students is voluntary. We are asking that any student interested in helping bring ONE care kit to school by Friday, January 29.

Care kits should be assembled in a gallon size zip loc bag and include the items listed below. In addition, care kits must include $1 to cover the shipping fees. Please send completed kits only.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness as we try to reach across the world and provide relief to those in Haiti while teaching our students the importance of taking action and helping others.

"Drive" a Walking School Bus

A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that’s part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers.

Broadmoor Elementary will hold its school-wide Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 14th @ 1:15 PM in the BES Common's Area. The winner and runner up will have the opportunity to compete in the Miami County Spelling Bee On February 5th, at 1:30 PM in the Paola Middle School Auditorium.

The winner of the county spelling bee will represent Miami County at the Great Bend Tribune Sunflower Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Barton County Community College in Great Bend. The second place winner will be the alternate representative.

What Exactly is a Formative Assessment?

In the coming weeks, you will probably hear talk about taking formative assessments from your child. Formative assessments are a part of the instructional process. When incorporated into classroom practice, it provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening. In this sense, formative assessment informs both teachers and students about student understanding at a point when timely adjustments can be made. These adjustments help to ensure students achieve, targeted standards-based learning goals within a set time frame. Formative assessment also help teachers determine next steps during the learning process as the instruction approaches the summative assessment of student learning, which in our case are the Kansas state assessments.

When your child mentions taking a formative assessment at school, ask them what it covered and how they did. It will be a great indicator as to their grasp on what has been taught recently in reading and math.

Accelerated Reader Goal Update

For those of you that didn't know, BES set a building goal of 25,000 AR points for the school year. I am happy to announce that we are on pace to shatter it with 19,406 points after just 2 quarters. That is already 2,000 points more than last school year's total amount! Accelerated Reader (AR) provides daily information about student reading and makes it easy to continuously monitor comprehension, track the time students spend reading, and differentiate reading practice. The students at Broadmoor have really taken to our 25,000 point, around the world challenge. To keep up with your child's progress towards their personal goal, sign up for the AR Home Connect. With the home connect, the results of quizzes that your child takes are automatically sent via email to you. If you need your child's home connect number, please contact their teacher.

DIBELS Testing

FYI - All of our students here are going through DIBELS testing before the end of the quarter. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills. The DIBELS test is one way we use to chart growth in reading and it gives us the necessary information to see if interventions are needed. What Exactly is a Fred?

You may have heard your child talk about "Freds" at BES this school year, and maybe your child has even come home with a Fred name tag on and wondered what it meant. Here at BES we used the book, "The Fred Factor" to set the tone for the kind of place we want this school to be. It is based on a mailman named Fred who does the little things to make a difference in people's lives. The book has 4 principles:

1. Everyone Makes A Difference.

2. Everything Is Built On Relationships.

3. You Must Continually Create Value For Others, And It Doesn't Have To Cost A Penny.

4. You Can Reinvent Yourself Regularly.

Student Pick Up and Drop Off Reminder

I just wanted to remind everyone that in the mornings students need to be dropped off on the east side of BES at the main entrance of the building. Also, we ask that if you pick your child up after school, you park in the south parking lot and wait for them to come to you. Please do not park in the fire lane to pick up your child. There are a lot of vehicles in and out at those times and keeping our students safe is our top priority.

5th Grade Wax Musuem

If you did not get to attend the 5th grade's wax museum, there are some pictures below. The students did an AMAZING job researching and getting their projects ready to show! I've said it before and I'll say it again, the students and staff here at BES are the BEST!

BES Students Collect 1755 Items for AGAPE Food Pantry!

I am very proud of the BES students for their overwhelming generosity during our food drive. We collected a whopping 1755 items to be donated to the AGAPE Food Pantry here in town. The class that collected the most was to receive a pizza party, but we because we had 2 classes that went way above and beyond expectations, we decided to reward them both! Mrs. Randolph's class won the competition with 193 items and Mrs. O'Grady's class was a close 2nd with 183 total items. Congratulations to both of their classes and to all of our students!
